Speech and Language Services
Anderson Speech Consultants is proud to offer a full range of speech services for children,
adolescents and adults. Our approach begins with a full assessment by a qualified Speech-Language
Pathologist. The results of the assessment will be used to develop an individualized plan to
achieve your goals. Services are offered via a one-to-one approach or group sessions. At
Anderson Speech Consultants we believe in working with the client, family/caregiver, and any
community agency involved in your care.

When is a speech assessment needed?
This a common question asked by many people. If you are concerned about your or your child's
speech you are probably right and a speech assessment would be beneficial.
|
Other indicators are:
- Speech draws unwanted attention to the speaker
- Speaker is frustrated or beginning to have behaviour difficulties
- Speaker has difficulty communicating his/her needs or ideas
- The language delay is interfering with academic learning
- Peers are making comments about the speech productions (can't understand or sound funny)
What type of problems do you assess?
We assess a wide variety of speech and language difficulties.
These include:
- Articulation Delays
This is when you don't understand what your child is saying because they
are having difficulty with their speech sound productions. In other words, they are mispronouncing
certain sounds (example "tat" for "cat", "tep" for "step". Articulation delays vary from a few sounds
in error to multiple sounds in error.
- Language Delays
- Language therapy encompasses a wide range of services, from
the understanding of language to the use of language. Toddlers (18 - 24 months) who are not speaking
or using a few words benefit from an early identification and intervention model. Parent training is
the main focus so language facilitation strategies can be used throughout the child's day. Play is the
medium used. Preschool and school age children may experience difficulty in learning concepts, following
directions, or expressing themselves (ex. Limited vocabulary word finding difficulty, grammatical
errors). School aged children may have a learning disability with a specific language impairment which
affects their ability to comprehend oral or written language which in turn affects their learning of
academic material. Reading may also be an area of difficulty.
- Stuttering
Stuttering is defined as difficulty with the flow and rhythm of
speech. This can occur when sounds, syllables, words or phrases have multiple repetitions, are prolonged,
or blocked. When this occurs a person's communication is affected. Many times people stop trying to tell
a story, participate in class, do a presentation, or do a specific type of job that requires a lot of
talking.
- Voice Problems
Voice disorders can occur when the sound of your voice distracts
the listener from your message. It may be an abnormal loudness, pitch or the overall voice quality for
the sex, or age of the speaker. Listeners may comment on how high or low your pitch is, or how your
voice has a hoarse quality. It is important to see a medical specialist to rule out any medical conditions.
